We began in 2004 with a goal to teach young men how to become leaders and make a difference in their communities. We introduced a mentoring program called, The Young Warriors For Christ Rites of Passage Mentorship Program. We believe that when young people are involved in constructive activities and have conscientious mentors, we can deter the incidence of violence, gang participation, drug use, life indifference, avoidable health risks and truancy. As a mentoring program, we focused on empowering youth by giving them, time, structure, training, responsibility, fun and respect. Our sessions have aided in facilitating the development of self-awareness and skills that increase mental capabilities. We also address moral discipline and competence using small and large group exercises to help youth become intentional about taking their rightful place in society. Research shows that boys can lose their academic interests at a young age; our goal is to prevent them from becoming disenfranchised about their education and career ambitions. Education is liberating when you are intentional about learning. In addition to understanding who they are, some of the topics we address are as follows:
-
Decision Making
-
Conflict Resolution
-
Relationships Building
-
Entrepreneurship
-
Money Management
-
Health
-
Sexuality
-
Etiquette
-
Presentation Skills
Once youth have a vision of their own success and behold the modeling of success, they are on the path to success; “by beholding we become changed.” Of all the young men who have finished our program, 100% have graduated from high school and 90% have gone on to higher educational Institutions. Many of the youth have returned to express their gratitude and share their experiences of how our training enhanced their skills and increased their confidence when volunteering for school programs or other organizations with employment potential.
